Workshops

It's All About the Hips
with Yasmina, 8 - 9 a.m.

We'll start the day working on our hips along with hip shimmies, foot work and layering on upper body movements to create several combos to add into your dance. We'll warm up our glut muscles to add sharp accents to our hip moves and slow it down to make nice ooey-gooey & juicy hip movements.

This workshop is open to all levels.

workshop is 1 hours - $15

About the instructor:

Yasmina has been teaching belly dancing since 1989 in the Phoenix area. She teaches workshops in and around the State of AZ and US and was honored to be an instructor at the Las Vegas Bellydance Intensive in Sept. 2012. In July 2011 she won Headliner of the Year at Wiggles of the West Dance Competition in Las Vegas; a goal she had worked towards for many years and finally achieved. Yasmina won Arizona Favorite Tribal Solo Artist 2013 and Arizona's Lifetime Achievement 2013.

Yasmina’s TV show “Joy of Belly Dancing” lasted 13 years in the Valley of the Sun from 1990 – 2003. The show was both instructional and performance style with spotlighting dancers and musicians from all over the US. From the show Yasmina produced 5 videos for the market all performance videos.

In 1990 Yasmina saw the need of an informative website on the Internet.  With the lack of information about belly dancing on the Internet at the time she created her labor of love website, www.joyofbellydancing.com.   Her website is known worldwide and still continues to grow informing dancers of this beautiful art form we call belly dancing.

After her first belly dance class she was hooked and hasn’t stopped learning and dancing.  Her style of dance is American with tribal fused in. American style is a fusion of many styles of belly dancing in itself and with tribal added in it creates a unique blend.

Be ready to smile as the music and movement moves you!

Bra Covering and Embellishment: down and dirty tricks and secrets for a professional looking bedlah
with Rukshana, 11:30 -12:45 p.m.

This workshop will focus on how to get the most bang for your buck when covering dance bras. Topics covered will include: the best types of bras to cover, easy ways to stabilize ready to wear cups, how to drape a bra cover with both stretch and woven fashion fabrics, and making your fashion fabric choices work for the bedlah. Numerous examples will be provided of how to maximize your fashion fabrics impact on the finished costume and professional tricks will be shared on how to embellish on a time constraint and/or budget. As always there will be a detailed handout outlining all of the material covered in the workshop as well as suggested resource guide. Participants are encouraged to bring their current projects.

workshop is 1 hour 15 minutes - $20

About the instructor:

Rukshana (rook SHAH na) began belly dancing in 2002. She performs American Cabaret,
Bollywood/Bhangra and multiple fusion styles. She is a founding member of cARTel bellydance. Rukshana has been a house dancer at Tandoori Times since 2006. Additionally, she teaches workshops in a number of subjects but primarily focuses on balance props (sword and tray).

Rukshana has an MFA in Scenography with a Costume Focus and has been working professionally in theatre since 1994. Belly dance was supposed to take her away from her day job(s) as a freelance theatrical costume designer, draper and costume painter/dyer. Instead her dance and theatrical design experience culminated into the creation of her own dance wear company in 2008, Rukshana Raks! Rukshana continues to create custom costumes for individuals and troupes, provide alterations and costume refurbishment. She has taught numerous workshops in Bra and Belt Construction (class typically meets 4 weeks for a total of 10-12 hours of instruction or as a two day event with 4-6 hours per day), Low Water Immersion Dyeing: Silk Veils (a ‘make and take’ 2 hour class), and Basic Circle Skirt Construction. She also teaches private sewing lessons on an even larger variety of costume topics.

K-Pop Infusion!” -
with Diosa, 1 - 2:30 p.m.

With the insurgence of manga and anime becoming more and more popular, we’re also seeing a trend in the popularity of Asian-influenced music and dances here in America. Learn crisp, sharp moves infused with belly dance in a medley of combinations and sound. Let your creativity and fun-factor flow as we add unique blocking and roll-off techniques to make your next choreography dynamic!

workshop is 1 1/2 hours - $25

About the instructor:

Diosa is an award-winning Phoenix-based dancer who has danced in the Valley-area since 2001. She fuses eclectic, electro music with her Egyptian Cabaret roots, enchanting audiences with her colorful double veils in Egyptian Cabaret, her energetic style in "Bellywood", her pop-and-locks in Belly Hop Fusion, and her experimental pieces for unconventional-themed shows.

Her foundations led her to join Danah’s Arizona Belly Dance Troupe and Ava Fleming’s Black Opal, both based in Egyptian Cabaret. Branching out to other fusion troupes such as Melissa’s Unity in Motion and K-Lee’s Natium Tribal Dance, Diosa discovered her niche. She placed runner-up in the Fusion Category at Bellydancer of the Universe in 2004. She continued to take many workshops with master instructors such as Suhaila Salimpour, Jillina, and Rachel Brice. As a local instructor, Diosa taught foundations, choreography, strength training, and aerobic fitness for the City of Surprise, Luke Air Force Base, Synergy Center, Gold’s Gym, Naturally Women Fitness Centers and more.

By day, Diosa is a Visual Arts teacher for 7-12th grades at a school in the West Valley, mother of two NAU graduates, wife to her handsome husband of 22 years, and pet parent to a menagerie of animals. By night, Diosa is the director and choreographer of The Desert Flowers and Osiris. They perform at local festivals and fairs, as well as events such as the Wild Wild West Steampunk Convention and Phoenix Fan Fusion. Diosa also teaches at her home studio where she holds troupe rehearsals, choreography crams, private lessons and drill classes. Her newest venture is taking on the role of Publisher of Shimmy Magazine, and she is always looking for contributors to extend their knowledge and experiences.

As a teacher, performer, and lifelong-student, Diosa’s mission is to nurture her love of dance with kindred spirits through energetic movement, audience connection, and innovative dance interpretation. You can learn more about Diosa and her style of dance by visiting www.planetbelly.com.

Cross Fit” -
with Krisenna, 3 - 4:30 p.m.

Are you a Tribal Fusion or an Oriental dancer who is interested in changing things up a bit? Cross training is a great way to expand your vocabulary of movement, but it can be frustrating trying to figure out how to tweak your current movement to fit a different style. Krisenna has studied with some incredible Tribal and Fusion instructors such as Rachel Brice, Zoe Jakes, Mira Betz & Amy Sigil. She has also had the opportunity to learn from Dina, Shahrzad Cairo, Aziza Cairo & Raqia Hassan. Krisenna loves training in multiple styles and has put together a class based on the way she learned to adjust staple movements to be able to perform both Tribal Fusion and Oriental pieces.

workshop is 1 1/2 hours - $25

About the instructor:

Krisenna’s formal dance training began at the tender age of 3. She wowed audiences with her enthusiasm for performance as a dedicated dancer for the Talent Factory. Years of gymnastics, tap, jazz, hip-hop, ballet and ballroom classes built a strong foundation for her path as a professional choreographer/performer and dance/gymnastics instructor. When Krisenna was 8, her step mother introduced her to Cabaret belly dance. Krisenna’s vocal training and piano lessons also helped to shape her understanding and love of music as a creative outlet.

Krisenna’s passion for music and art flourished early on, but it wasn’t until after college that she became a formal student of belly dance (at Shimmy Shakti Studio). Discovering the tribal fusion style presented Krisenna with a new focus which she has studied with ignited zeal by traveling all over the nation to attend workshops, intensives, and classes from some of the most highly acclaimed dancers in the world including Zoe Jakes, Kami Liddle, Amy Sigil, Sharon Kihara, Rachel Brice, Audra Simmons, Lady Fred & Mira Betz. She has completed intensives and certified to teach Unmata ITS Beginning, Intro, Intermediate & Advanced (later changed to a " Levels System").

Krisenna directed the Pretty Hard Corps dance troupe in New York (2012/2014). She moved to Casa Grande AZ in the middle of 2014 and started dancing with RaMagik (2014-2019). In 2016, she started dancing with Shahrazad Dance Company (2016-2018) in Phoenix and was part of the trios that captured international titles at the Ahlan Wa Sahlan Festival in Cairo. In Cairo, Krisenna was honored to study with some of the most notable dancers in Egyptian / Oriental dance (Dina, Hoda, Mohamed Salah, Lucy, Daria Mitskevich, Kasumi, Darina Konstantinova, Aziza Cairo, Dr. Mo Gedawwi, Soraia Zaied, Maryam Aguirre & Leyla Lanty).

In 2017, Krisenna produced the first annual Amethyst Dance Festival, and in 2019, she formed the Amethyst World Dance Company.

Krisenna is currently offering belly dance instruction at her Castle Drive home studio in Casa Grande, Arizona - at Thrive Cultural Academy in Casa Grande, Arizona and at The Studio in Casa Grande, Arizona.
